About Mark

As Assistant Vice Provost & Deputy Dean of Students, Mark provides strategy, policy, compliance, and communication leadership for the Dean of Student’s office. Mark also oversees a team within the Dean of Students office responsible for coordinating the campus response to students in distress and in need of support. Prior to his current role, Mark was an Associate Dean of Students & Director of the Office of Community Standards (OCS). Mark began his career at Stanford as a University Counsel in the Office of the General Counsel, and prior to that he practiced law for seven years at a large international law firm in San Francisco.

Since joining Stanford, Mark has made it his purpose to teach students that it is okay to fail (something he has learned a lot from personal experience). Now, he continues to work closely with the Dean of Students team to help students to embrace their imperfections and to learn and grow from their mistakes.

Mark is a member of the SF La Raza Lawyers Association. He also serves on the board of the Mind Body Awareness Project, whose mission is to help youth transform harmful behavior and lead meaningful lives through mindfulness meditation and emotional awareness.

Mark earned his undergraduate degree in Philosophy, magna cum laude, from Boston College and a Juris Doctorate, cum laude, from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law.

When not working, Mark can be found lounging with his cat, Lilo, rooting for his hometown Boston/San Antonio sports teams, or exploring San Francisco with his partner and their Boston Terrier, Sancho.
